RSW among seven largest airports in the world? Yeah, we were surprised, too. Plus, reader question: When are we getting that second runway?
After the early March column on Southwest Florida International Airport and its billions of bucks, we heard from the always insightful reader John Jaffee, who flung a good follow-up question at In the Know.
“Phil, thanks for all the facts and figures about RSW that keeps getting more popular every year,” Estero’s Double J-meister said. “One fact I was hoping for some insight on: The second runway. I know it is planned for. Any idea the timeline for it?”
OK., Jaffman. Let’s give that one a whirl, and also provide the latest stats that show RSW is one of the largest airports on Earth. Yep, that was a little surprising even to those of us who grew up here.

October has arrived. For those of us living in Southwest Florida that can mean many things, but nothing bigger than cooler weather is coming soon (hopefully) and right behind it snowbirds and tourists.
It’s called season.
The fact that more people travel here in the late fall, winter and early spring, has the attention of commercial airlines like Breeze Airways. Starting back in the spring Breeze has been announcing added routes for seasonal travelers as well as some permanent routes at Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) in Fort Myers.
There are 11 total, including seven starting this week from $65* one way.
The first three new routes begin on Wednesday (Oct. 2, 2024).
Check out the new routes on naplesnews.com.

If Naples officials decide to move the Naples Airport, a new one in east Collier County with private and commercial flights would cost at least $1.6 billion.
That’s what the exploratory study commissioned by Naples Airport Authority concluded.
The study submitted to the Airport Authority by Environmental Science Associates (ESA) is just the first element in the initial planning phase. The consultants estimate a 15-20-year timeline to first flight. It offers cost estimates, location considerations, ideas for a new use for the existing airport, where the money might be found and next steps if the Airport Authority Board of Commissioners chooses to move forward.
ESA was not asked to determine which site was best or whether the airport should be moved.
Whether the Airport Authority commissioners, with Naples City Council’s input, decides to pursue building a new airport somewhere in east Collier County is still up for discussion. The final exploratory study documents recently were sent to the Authority. The authority’s commissioners will discuss the study at its Aug. 15 meeting. The airport authority has a lease with the city of Naples for its 733 acres until 2068.
The study was commissioned in October 2023 following a $2 million noise study that was accepted by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in June this year.
