Naples Winter Wine Festival

Naples Winter Wine FestivalNaples Winter Wine Festival grew from table talk to event that has raised $160M for kids

SHELBY REYNOLDS | naplesnews.com

The Naples Winter Wine Festival started as a conversation among friends over lunch.

Seventeen years later, the annual festival has raised more than $160 million, making it the most successful charity wine auction in the nation.

The four-day affair has become synonymous with fine dining, the world’s best100-point wines and a thrilling auction selling overseas trips on jets, fast cars and private concerts with music stars.

The motto is, “It’s all for the kids.”

Every cent of the money raised benefits the Naples Children & Education Foundation.

festival in 2001 to support charitable programs that improve the physical, emotional and educational lives of children in low-income families.

In a county where zero tax dollars support children’s social services, more than half of Collier County children are served, in some way, by the Naples Children & Education Foundation.

In January, the Naples Winter Wine Festival collected $15.1 million under the auction tent. It was its second-largest total so far, about $1 million less than raised in 2007.

On Monday, the foundation will divide $12.25 million among 34 local charities. The remaining $2.8 million will be reserved in a fund for programs and children in the future.

Choosing which charities to support is a decision organizers don’t take lightly.

“It’s very, very difficult,” said foundation CEO Maria Jimenez-Lara. “Although we’ve been very successful at fundraising, we can’t keep up pace.

“It’s very rewarding that we know the funds are effective … but it’s challenging because we know that it’s not going to meet that need and fund that child forever. There’s always that caveat.”

‘We thought we needed to help’

It all began with a conversation around a table. Twelve friends got together for lunch and talked about their passions for wine and helping children.

Many of them, such as Denise Cobb with the Boys & Girls Club, already were involved with local charities.

“We learned that none of the tax dollars raised in Collier County go to children’s social services, which is unbelievable and appalling,” said Cobb, a founding trustee of the festival and a 2017 cochair. “We thought we needed to help out.”

From the beginning, the Naples Winter Wine Festival was meant to bring attendees not only from Southwest Florida, but also from around the country. Organizers invited chefs, vintners and someliers from renowned locations all over the world.

And it worked.

Part-time Naples resident Judy Sheindlin, the no-nonsense Judge Judy, attended the first auction. Wolfgang Puck joined as chef du cuisine in 2007 and returned to two more festivals to prepare private vintner dinners at homes in Naples.

“I’ve been to a lot of benefits,” Puck said in the kitchen of a top-floor Naples penthouse in January. “It’s nice to see people with money give back to something.”

Each year, festival-goers bid hundreds of thousands of dollars on auction lots that have included safari trips to Africa, a five-night stay in Argentina and a two-week cruise around the world.

At the 2017 auction, none of the 62 lots sold for less than $100,000.

In terms of totals raised under the tent, the wine festival in Naples is rated No. 1, according to the latest report from 2015 by Wine Spectator magazine, the definitive authority on charity wine auctions after compiling a list of the top 10 most successful festivals since 2001.

The extravagant Naples event has topped the list for 10 of the past 15 years, going head to head with the likes of Napa Valley and Sonoma, California.
“The Naples Winter Wine Festival is unique in that people really come knowing that they’re going to make a large donation,” said Jeff Gargiulo, a Napa Valley vintner who was also at the lunch table 17 years ago to start the conversation.

“The expectations are we’re going to have a lot of fun while we give money away,” Gargiulo said. “We make it as much fun as you can have legally.”

‘It’s all for the kids’

The festival starts with the kids.

On the first day, patrons gather at a charity organization in Collier County for “Meet the Kids Day,” to see firsthand how their donations impact the charity’s ability to expand, and to interact directly with at-risk children.

“(Patrons) see the actual need that is still existing,” Cobb said. “That gets them excited, and to meet the kids is an incredible thing.”

And the need for childcare in Southwest Florida is great, organizers say.

More than half of the children in Collier County are considered economically needy, Jimenez-Lara said. That equates to an income of about $48,000 for a family of four.

Grants from NCEF fund, on average, about 28 charities and their programs each year. Those charities, for example, provide food distribution to hungry children, host health care workshops at community centers and provide dental sealants for elementary school students to prevent cavities.

“The safety nets we built are designed to help kids from falling through the cracks,” Jimenez-Lara said. “We’ve tried to build systems of care so that you don’t have to put a Band-Aid on it. We want happy and real outcomes for the children, and not just that we bought them some time.”

Friends of Foster Children Forever, which provides abused, neglected and abandoned children with social, educational and financial support, has been a regular grantee of NCEF’s funding. Since its first grant in 2002, Friends of Foster Children Forever has received more than $4 million from NCEF, said Jane Billings, the organization’s executive director.

“It’s just extraordinary,” she said. “We’ve helped thousands of foster children.”

What makes the Naples Winter Wine Festival one of the best, organizers say, is NCEF has been able to bring charities with similar missions together to collaborate to aid the community. NCEF “plants a seed,” Jimenez-Lara said, and then lets the work be done.

It’s a rare practice in communities across the country, Jimenez-Lara said. Many charity organizations compete against one another to receive grants and funds.

Friends of Foster Children Forever, for example, has now been able to partner with Collier County schools, case management agencies and Florida Gulf Coast University.

“The respect and trust you earn by being one of their organizations builds and open doors,” Billings said. “This community would not be where we are in caring for our children if we didn’t have NCEF. They have changed the whole infrastructure of our community and how we care for our children. … I don’t know anywhere else where this is happening.”

How grants are decided

It takes about six months, Jimenez-Lara said, for an 11-member board to decide how to divide millions of dollars collected from the auction.

At 4 p.m. Monday at Bay Colony Golf Club in Naples, NCEF will announce which 34 charities will receive grants, and how much they will get from the $12.25 million pot.

“I think the work that we do is so important and so special,” Jimenez-Lara said. “We work really hard to be good stewards of the money we raised, but I also think the happiest part of this is that we’ve made such large strides as a community.

“Where we get to divide the money is a very special day for us.”

A Naples design panel gave final approval Wednesday to a real estate developer’s plan for a downtown promenade of waterfront dining on Naples Bay.

The six-member design review board voted unanimously in favor of the project from Naples Bay Center LLC for five restaurants with rooftop and outdoor dining overlooking the bay near Riverpoint Drive and the Fifth Avenue South bridge.

Harry Zea, the project’s developer, said construction should start this summer and that he hopes to have The Prom on Fifth open by the end of tourist season in 2018.

With approximately 450 seats of roof-top and outdoor dining, 10 dock spaces open to boaters and a boardwalk wrapping around the property, the project stands to become one of the largest public waterfront venues in the city.
“It had to be presented where it was an open atmosphere that incorporated the most fun aspect: the water,” Zea said about his vision for the promenade, which he calls a legacy project.

“It’s rewarding in the sense that I think when you have an idea that’s based upon good intentions — when you can make it actually work on the business side of things — it’s a perfect scenario.”
Zea said 16 restaurants are being considered for the five promenade spaces. He said there will be a variety of offerings.

“A seafood place, a steakhouse, a healthy-eating alternative — we want to make it a place where you go three to four times per week and not always go to the same restaurant,” Zea said.
Zea said the restaurants will be open for lunch and dinner throughout the week, with a possibility for Sunday brunch.

The restaurants will close at 10 p.m. on weeknights and 11 p.m. on weekends, Zea said.

The 1.8-acre site, across Riverpoint Drive from Kelly’s Fish House, has sat vacant for years. The planned one-story building will include roughly 5,800 square feet of rooftop dining and two levels of underground parking. The 296 parking spaces will be open to the general public.

A sidewalk connects the site to Fifth Avenue to the west and Naples Bay Resort, along with the Royal Harbor neighborhood to the east. Design board members commended Zea and architects from Stofft Cooney Architects.

Naples Winter Wine Festival

Naples Winter Wine Festival

See ‘Hamilton’? Sail to Havana? Prizes set for Winter Wine Fest

HARRIET HOWARD HEITHAUS | HARRIET.HEITHAUS@NAPLESNEWS.COM; 239-213-6091

The Naples Winter Wine Festival has released a final list of wow-er-than-ever prize auction lots for its 2017 auction, and even board members admit to having their noses pressed against the figurative store window.
“We did this to ourselves,” said Brian Cobb, one of the co-chairs of the festival Jan. 27-29. “We tried to have a lot of ingredients in a lot of lots this year. We tried to mix it up, and we had a lot more input from board members than we usually do.”

The festival, which has brought in $146 million for its Naples Children & Education Foundation, swaps places nearly every year with Napa Valley as top-grossing festival. It has topped Wine Spectator’s Top Ten Charity Wine list for at least eight of the last 12 years.

Among its initiatives have been development of the NCEF Early Childhood Center in East Naples, its child care partnership and construction of a primary care clinic in Immokalee, and its “Lunch Boxes of Love” that provide nutritious food to children who might otherwise go hungry or be undernourished.

NCEF raises money through its $10,000 per couple Naples Winter Wine Festival each January. The festival has become known for both its vintner dinners, which pairs celebrity chefs and well-known vineyards, and a wine auction that includes experiential packages found nowhere else in the world.

Among the travel covetables just announced:

» An exclusive week on the private Australian island of Virgin Group magnate Sir Richard Branson. Among its offerings: a sunset cruise on the island’s aircraft carrier barge and a gourmet picnic on its secluded Northshore beaches.
» A skiing adventure that includes private jet transportation to a private ski and golf community, the Yellowstone Club, where lot winners could run into — not literally, they hope — members such as Justin Timberlake, Bill Gates and Jennifer Garner on the slopes. Next, jet to Deer Valley for a stay in suites at the slopeside St. Regis and more skiing.
» Sailing, by private yacht, to Havana for a luxury Cuban holiday in a nation on the brink of change and with new interest in and from the U.S..
» A seven-day fresh-air feast, with hideaway hikes on lesser known trails and close looks at attractions such as Old Faithful at Yellowstone Park. A transfer to an Amangan deluxe suite overlooking ski and hiking mecca Jackson Hole includes offroad tours and more. Visits to Zion National Park and both rims of the Grand Canyon will offer similar adventures.
» A suite for two weeks on The World to winner’s choice ports of call, with five of those nights onboard with Ann Colgin and Joe Wender, of Colgin Cellars; a private onboard dinner party and vertical wine tasting with the ship’s sommelier are included.
» A week absorbing wine, culinary and cultural experiences across Argentina, with private tango lessons, spa treatments and VIP wine tastings. There’s a private dinner at celebrity chef Francis Mallman’s restaurant, where he presides over the pit cooking that has brought him international fame.
» A week at Villa Paraiso, a sweeping open-air home on a private beach in Manzanillo, Mexico, with views of both the Sierra Madre Mountains and the Pacific Ocean from its dual-level infinity-edge pool.

Experiential packages have two unorthodox offerings. One is a Madison Square Garden suite “donated to us by the owner,” said Cobb; the other is a trip with top amenities to see a concert that pulls in music stars like Florence and the Machine, the Lumineers, Buddy Guy and Lenny Kravitz: » A three-city, three-nation hop among Broadway, to see the musical sensation “Hamilton”; the elegant Schloss Elmau spa and retreat in the Bavarian Alps; and an exclusive Chopard Jewelry event in Geneva.

» The luxury suite at Madison Square Garden for 20 people, with your choice from a variety of high-profile events, such as concerts by Billy Joel or Ariana Grande, a New York Knicks game or The Westminster Dog Show.
» Four platinum tickets to the dream rock concert known as BottleRock. Last year the trip for four to the three-day Napa Valley concert of music giants was so coveted it went for $240,000 — and two other bidders matched it to bring in around $750,000 for the 2016 Naples Winter Wine Festival. It includes lodging, private shuttle to premium seats, meals prepared by name chefs and more.
» The Concours d’Elegance at Pebble Beach, with chauffeured service in a Bentley, to see 200 of the most prized collector cars in the world. Weekend lodgings are at a private home on 20 acres in the Santa Ynez Valley, with one night at San Ysidro Ranch in Santa Barbara.
» A private performance by hot-ticket comedian Sebastian Maniscalco. The winner chooses the destination, and Maniscalco unloads his manic takes on what everyone is thinking for 50 people of the winner’s choosing.
» VIP access to the “Project Runway” season finale in New York City and a meetand- greet with supermodel-businesswoman Heidi Klum, plus tickets to the Michael Kors and Zac Posen fashion shows. Included among meals at haute cuisine places is a dinner at Fowler & Wells, celebrity chef Tom Colicchio’s new restaurant.

Two things are important to the spirit of the festival, according to Cobb: That “everything under the tent goes toward the children,” that is, bettering the lives and futures of children in Collier County; and that the festival stay true to its title as a wine festival “That’s important to us. We tried to pair a wine component with as many lots as possible,” Cobb said. Even the BottleRock concert has an evening dedicated to good wine, food and a concert with two of the NWWF 2017 co-chairs, Jeff Gargiulo and Valerie Boyd, at their nearby vineyard.

Some of the lots are expressly dedicated to appreciating wine, including: » A private visit to the home of Krug Champagne in Reims, France, where winners will open and taste “Krug Collection 1966,” one of the last of the bottles in the Krug cellar.

» Three nights in an 18th century guest house in Beaune, France, the wine capital of Burgundy, including a personal visit of Maison Joseph Drouhin’s historic cellars. It comes with private dinner in their 13th century cellar and an exclusive tour through Burgundy’s best vineyards.
» An 11-night package stay in Venice, Verona, Valpolicella, Montalcino and Bolgheri. Lot winners will enjoy events such as a vertical tasting of top Allegrini wines, dinner at its historic Villa Della Torre and a private visit to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice
