It’s been seven months since a groundbreaking ceremony was held to commemorate the start of the reconstruction of the Naples Pier that was destroyed by Hurricane Ian in September of 2022.
With fall approaching and the start of snowbird and tourist season not far behind, the Naples Daily News paid another visit near the site on Aug. 4 to see how things are going. It’s a very active construction site. There are multiple cranes moving materials for the crew of workers that are spread out across the structure. One crane toward the west end of what will be the new pier was pile driving.
As Naples Daily New reporter Liz Freeman wrote in her June update on the reconstruction of the pier:
Driving in the new pilings is no small feat. The crews use high-pressure water to help position the piling and then drive it into place using an impact hammer. The process can take up to two days for each support section, known as a “bent,” which consists of three pilings that will ultimately support a concrete cap. he said. The new pier will have 56 bents in total.
