Best places to retire in Florida? Of course there is a SWFL location on this list

Mark H. Bickel | Naples Daily News

Not that we didn’t know this already, but it doesn’t hurt to be reminded: Naples is a great place to retire in Florida.

Kiplinger agrees, picking Naples as one of its six ‘best places’ to retire in Florida for 2025.

What Kiplinger said about retiring to Naples
If you want to show off your Ferrari, hit the links, and retire in style on Florida’s west coast

For those drawn to Florida’s Gulf Coast, Naples is synonymous with wealth and the good life, and with an ample population of retirees. Parks, golf courses, and pickleball courts abound, not to mention the enduring attraction of its beaches, with their soft sands, calm waters, and spectacular sunsets.

Paradise Coast Trail: It’s coming along for walking, biking and running enthusiasts

Paradise Coast Trail: It’s coming along for walking, biking and running enthusiasts

Liz Freeman | Naples Daily News

The Naples Pathways Coalition is the driving force behind an ambitious project for more options for walking, running, and bicycling without worry of getting hit by cars.

The project, Paradise Coast Trail, was introduced by the coalition in 2018. It is proposed as 100 miles of paved pathway, separate from roads, that will connect Naples to Ave Maria and to Collier Seminole State Park, and Bonita Springs, according to the coalition’s executive director, Michelle Avola-Brown.

In 2023, the state Legislature adopted the segment of the Paradise Coast Trail from Marco Island through Naples, the new Paradise Coast Sports Complex, Ave Maria, Everglades City, and Immokalee into the state’s SUN Trail network that runs through the state.

Latest list of best hospitals: Who made it in Southwest Florida?

Latest list of best hospitals: Who made it in Southwest Florida?

Liz Freeman | Naples Daily News

If all hospitals performed as the best, more than 173,000 lives would be saved

Several Southwest Florida hospitals made a list of the best 50 hospitals in the U.S. from Healthgrades, a leading rating organization.

In Lee County, three Lee Health hospitals earned the distinction. They are Cape Coral Hospital, Lee Memoria Hospital, and HealthPark Medical Center. Gulf Coast Medical Center made the top 100 hospitals nationally.

In neighboring Collier County, NCH’s two campuses, Baker Hospital and North Hospital, made the top 50 list.

Healthgrades evaluates risk-adjusted mortality and complication rates for more than 30 of the most common conditions and procedures at roughly 4,500 hospitals nationwide.

Earning the recognition of being among the 50 best hospitals means they are part of the top 1% nationally.

Medicare medical claims are used for the analysis for the most recent three-year period available. No hospital can opt-in or opt-out, nor can they submit their own data for overall care excellence.

Hidden oasis: Historic Bonita Springs landmark hidden in plain sight for a century

Hidden oasis: Historic Bonita Springs landmark hidden in plain sight for a century

Robyn George | Naples Daily News

For decades, it sat quietly, shrouded in mystery and virtually invisible to passersby.

Just steps off Old 41 Road in the heart of Bonita Springs, Shangri-La Springs might as well have been miles away, secluded behind its growing wall of green.

“I’ve been here most of my entire life and always knew it was there,” said Maikol Henriquez, executive director of Bonita Springs Historical Society. “It had gates up and I’d look over and wonder what it was. There was a certain aura around it. It was very mysterious, but not in a negative way.”

But slowly, things began to change. After being closed for two decades, the property was opened to the public in 2015, grand opening ceremony and ribbon cutting included.

Then, last October, the wall separating the property from the eyes of the world was removed.

“When I gave the OK to take it down, it was a much bigger deal than I thought,” general manager Lee Bellamy said laughing. “It wasn’t even a wall really. There was a chain link fence and a humongous hedge row had grown unattended for 25 to 30 years.”

Catching up on my accumulating Village of Estero correspondence: Estero is exploding with endeavors so today let’s hit a sampling of what you’re asking about. Roll out Numero Uno please:

“Thank you for your insightful and helpful articles,” said reader Brenan Riehl. “Do you know what the development timing is for the planned Woodfield Development commercial and residential project on Coconut Road across 41 from Coconut Point in Estero? When will construction commence?”

What’s the first phase of the massive project across from Coconut Point?
When we first broke the details of this U.S. 41 massive undertaking a couple of years ago, the goal had been for about now, and it appears to be pretty close to target, depending on the necessary red tape to protect the interests of all involved: The Village. The Village people. And the Village developer.

The Florida Department of Transportation is developing the Collier to Polk Regional path Master Plan, which aims to establish a multi-use path spanning about 200 miles through the counties of Collier, Hendry, Glades, Highlands, Hardee, and Polk.

The regional path will cross a variety of landscapes, connecting small towns, parks, preserves, heritage sites, and animal corridors. This vast project aims to boost economic and nature-based tourism throughout Florida’s Heartland, an area rich in natural beauty and cultural heritage.

The trail network will include key Collier County locations such as Big Cypress National Preserve and Collier-Seminole State Park, as well as local attractions like Baker Park and Gordon River Greenway Park, according to a recent article by Alexa Velez of NBC2.
