Federal agencies still haven’t signed off on a rebuild of the much-beloved Naples Pier.

At a workshop June 16, Naples City Council discussed potential changes to the design, but expressed reluctance to make any big ones, as it could drag out permitting.

During the workshop, Tim Hall, with Turrell, Hall & Associates, a consultant on the project, told council any significant changes could add months to the Army Corps of Engineers’ review and approval process.

“We’re hoping to get a permit from them probably in the September timeframe and it could add another six months on top of that,” he warned.

Council discussed changes to the land side of the pier only, including the addition of a restroom solely for use by the Naples Police Department, so officers could better secure and protect their safety equipment, including guns, while on duty.

Naples City Council approves multimillion-dollar contract to rebuild 30 beach entrances

Naples City Council approves multimillion-dollar contract to rebuild 30 beach entrances

Laura Layden | Naples Daily News

Naples has taken another big step in its recovery from Hurricane Ian.

On April 16, city council unanimously approved a nearly $2.6 million contract with Infinite Construction to rebuild 30 of its beach entrances ravaged by the destructive and deadly hurricane in 2022.

Not only did the public accesses points take a beating from Ian, but they got pummeled again by hurricanes Helene and Milton last year, causing more damage.

In total, the city has 40 entrances to the beach, with most of them still requiring extensive repairs to “make them whole again.” A handful are closed.

A few of the accesses that will be rebuilt have fencing up to keep sea turtles from nesting there, ahead of construction. Nesting season typically begins May 1.

Mark H. Bickel | Naples Daily News

Not that we didn’t know this already, but it doesn’t hurt to be reminded: Naples is a great place to retire in Florida.

Kiplinger agrees, picking Naples as one of its six ‘best places’ to retire in Florida for 2025.

What’s a “best beach towns” list without Naples being mentioned?

Not credible. At least that is our opinion.

So, kudos to Southern Living for getting the job done with its “The 50 best beach towns in the South 2025” list. The experts at Southern Living narrowed things down and beautiful Naples is No. 22 in the rankings.

Marco Island reuses sand instead of importing it for beach refurbishment, saving millions

Marco Island reuses sand instead of importing it for beach refurbishment, saving millions

J. Kyle Foster | Naples Daily News

Tigertail Beach and outlying Sand Dollar Island on Marco Island have been renourished after damage from storms in 2024.

Naples-based coastal engineering firm Humiston & Moore implemented what will be an ongoing plan to protect the natural elements, the water quality and the homes and condos behind them, reusing sand pushed by the storms instead of importing it. This north part of Marco Island has been retreating over the past few decades at a rate of 40 to 50 feet a year, said Humiston & Moore Vice President Mohamed Dabees, who presented results of the project at the Marco Island City Council meeting Tuesday night.

About 200,000 yards of sand was used for the renourishment.

“That project is a ground-breaking project, because it set a very good precedent of working with nature in the sense that it’s not a typical project where we’re building hard structures. It’s a project that uses land force to make energy dissipation from storms,” Dabees said at the Feb. 18 meeting.

“(Hurricane) Irma started the collapse of that system,” he said. That’s when Marco and Dabees started to create this ongoing plan for using Sand Dollar Island, considered a spit, the lagoon and the surrounding mangroves to create a protective barrier. Each protecting the other. The spit that serves as a berm, the sand, the float (or marked) channel, the lagoon and the mangroves serve to absorb the energy caused by storms. All of which help protect the buildings and the rest of the island behind them.
