Tamiami Trail – Tampa to Miami and vice versa – started with Dade County commissioners agreeing to fund a portion of the road in 1915 and ending with a 260-mile highway and a new county – Collier.
During the 13 years of construction, work would stop several times because of a lack of funds. Barron Gift Collier finally agreed to fund completion of eastern portion through The Everglades in exchange for Collier being formed out of what was then a giant Lee County and named for him. When finally completed in 1928, the trail would open up commerce, a new world for visitors and more residents to Florida.
Tamiami Trail, also known as U.S. Route 41 and U.S. 41, was considered a feat of civil engineering, requiring extensive labor and resources, including dynamite and specialized equipment.
